Salem residents can compost leaves and grass clippings for free at the Fall Leaf Haul on Saturday, December 3, 2016, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Homeowners may drop off grass clippings and leaves to turn them into compost locally. Properly disposing of leaves keeps them out of storm drains, preventing clogged storm drains and flooding.

According to the City, leaves and grass clippings are accepted, but not tree limbs. And, the program is designed for Salem residents only, so no compost is allowed from commercial landscapers.

There are a couple collection sites around town, the most convenient for NEN residents being the State Fairgrounds, where leaves can be dropped off at the Lana Avenue NE Gate and at the intersection of Lana Avenue NE and Silverton Road NE. The other drop off location is Brown’s Island Demolition Landfill at 2895 Faragate Street S.
